How do I get to the Amalfi Coast?

Train to Naples or Salerno, then a ferry in summer or a private transfer year-round — and do not plan to drive it yourself. From Naples, the Circumvesuviana line reaches Sorrento but it's slow, crowded and a poor start to a holiday with luggage. Ferries from Naples, Sorrento and Salerno to Positano and Amalfi are the pleasant way in from roughly April to October, and they also let you skip the coast road entirely. Outside ferry season, a pre-booked driver from Naples costs real money and is worth it. The coast road is spectacular, narrow, and not a place to learn Italian driving.
