Where should I go on a second trip to Italy?

Pick one region and stay in it. The obvious three are done; what's left is better. Western Sicily gives you Greek temples, Arab-Norman Palermo and the best food in the country for the lowest prices. The northern lakes — Como, Iseo, Garda — offer mountain-and-water scenery with almost no Americans on Iseo. Puglia has the whitewashed towns and the coastline that Instagram found late. The Veneto beyond Venice means Verona, the Prosecco hills and Palladian villas. Second trips work best slow: one base, ten days, a car, and no ambition to see anything twice.
