What is coperto and do I have to pay it?
Coperto is a per-person cover charge, usually €1.50–3.50, and yes, you pay it — it's legitimate and it must be printed on the menu. It's an old charge covering the table, the bread and the settings, it goes to the restaurant rather than the server, and it is not a tip or a service charge. Two things worth knowing: it isn't a scam or a tourist surcharge, and separately, some places add servizio (a service charge) instead or as well — if you see servizio on the bill, don't add anything further. If a menu shows no coperto and the bill does, that's worth questioning politely.
