Authentic Tuscany
Beyond Florence — hilltop villages, wine roads, and golden fields
The real Tuscany isn't the Uffizi gift shop or the leather markets near Ponte Vecchio. It's the sound of church bells echoing across a valley at sunset. It's a nonna teaching you to roll pici pasta by hand. It's driving down a cypress-lined road with Brunello in the trunk and nowhere to be. Yes, you'll see Florence — but just enough. Then we escape to the countryside where time moves at the speed of a long lunch.
Day by Day
Arrive in Florence. I time your Uffizi visit for the quietest slot (usually 8:15 AM opening or 4 PM late afternoon). Duomo exterior and Baptistery. Climb Giotto's Bell Tower (414 steps, less crowded than the Dome, same views).
Cross the Ponte Vecchio to the Oltrarno — Florence's artisan quarter. Watch craftsmen at work in botteghe that have been open for centuries. Lunch at a mercato trattoria — panino col lampredotto is the Florentine street food you need to try.
Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset (free, unforgettable). Dinner in Santo Spirito — the real Florentine neighborhood, not the tourist center.
Florence is a city you should spend 1.5 days in, not 4. Most Americans over-allocate time here and miss the countryside, which is the actual soul of Tuscany.
