The Northern Lakes Triangle

Como, Iseo & Garda — the Italy Americans don't know

Best for: Couples, Wine lovers, Nature seekers, Repeat visitors
Best months: May–June, September–October
Avg. daily budget: $120–200/day pp (excl. accommodation)

This is my home territory — I live 20 minutes from Lake Iseo and 40 minutes from Lake Como. Three lakes, three completely different personalities. Como is glamorous and cinematic. Iseo is wild, authentic, and practically unknown to Americans. Garda is dramatic, with Mediterranean vibes and world-class wine country on its eastern shore. Most tourists pick one lake and miss the other two. I'll show you all three, plus the Franciacorta wine region — Italy's answer to Champagne, and my personal favorite place on earth.

Day by Day

Morning

Arrive at Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) — the budget-friendly gateway that's actually MORE charming than Milan. I'll arrange a transfer to your hotel in Bergamo Alta (Upper Town), a medieval hilltop city with UNESCO-listed Venetian walls.

Afternoon

Walking tour of Bergamo Alta: Piazza Vecchia (one of Italy's most beautiful squares), the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and a ride on the funicular. This isn't a tourist town — it's a real, living Italian city that happens to be stunning.

Evening

Welcome dinner with Bergamasque specialties: casoncelli (stuffed pasta with butter and sage), polenta taragna (with buckwheat and local cheese), and Valcalepio wine. €30–40/person at a real local restaurant.

ALICE'S INSIDER TIP

Bergamo Alta has fewer tourists than any comparable Italian city. It's George Clooney's actual favorite Italian town (he owns a villa on Lake Como but dines in Bergamo).

Practical Info

getting Around

You'll need a rental car for this itinerary (automatic transmission available — request it early, they sell out). Italian highways (autostrade) are excellent but tolled (budget €30–40 total). I provide detailed driving directions including where to park (critical — lake towns have tiny streets).

budget

Winery tastings: €15–25/person. Ferry rides: €5–15/crossing. Restaurant dinners: €25–45/person. Daily budget (not including hotel/car): €80–150/person.

weather

Late spring/early fall is ideal: warm days (22–28°C), cool evenings, fewer crowds. Summer (July–Aug) is hot (32°C+) and the lakes are busy with Italian vacationers. Winter is mild but many lakeside restaurants close.

packing Tips

Layers — lake weather changes fast. Swimsuit (lakes have beaches!). Sunglasses. A light jacket for evening boat rides. Comfortable shoes for cobblestone walking.
