Rome Like a Local

5 days beyond the Colosseum — the Rome tourists never find

Best for: First-timers, Couples, History lovers
Best months: March–May, September–November
Avg. daily budget: $150–250/day pp (excl. accommodation)

Everyone goes to Rome. But most Americans see the same 10 places and eat at the same tourist traps near the Pantheon. I'll show you the Rome where I take my own family — the backstreet pizza al taglio shops, the neighborhood gelaterias where a scoop costs €2 (not €6), and the viewpoints where Romans actually go to watch the sunset. Yes, you'll see the Colosseum — but you'll also discover why Rome is called the Eternal City.

Day by Day

Morning

Land at Fiumicino (FCO). I'll arrange your airport transfer — no haggling with taxi drivers. Check into your hotel in the Monti neighborhood (Rome's coolest, most walkable district — way better than staying near Termini).

Afternoon

Gentle orientation walk: Piazza Navona, Pantheon (free entry!), and Trevi Fountain. Pro tip: visit Trevi at 7 AM tomorrow for photos without 500 selfie sticks.

Evening

Dinner at a family trattoria in Trastevere that has no English menu. I'll teach you what to order: cacio e pepe, supplì, and a carafe of house wine for €4. Total dinner cost for 2: about €45.

ALICE'S INSIDER TIP

Skip the restaurants right on Piazza Navona — they charge €18 for pasta that costs €9 two blocks away.

Practical Info

getting Around

Rome is best explored on foot. The Metro has 2 useful lines (A and B). Buy a 48-hour pass (€12.50) or weekly pass (€24). Taxis are metered — insist on it. Uber works but is more expensive than taxis in Rome.

budget

Street food lunch: €8–12/person. Trattoria dinner: €20–35/person with wine. Museum entries: €15–20 average. Daily budget (not including hotel): €100–180/person.

weather

Spring (April–May): 15–25°C, occasional rain. Summer (June–Aug): 30–38°C, very hot. Fall (Sept–Oct): 18–28°C, ideal. Winter (Nov–Feb): 5–15°C, fewer tourists.

packing Tips

Comfortable walking shoes (you'll walk 15,000+ steps/day). Light layers. A scarf for church visits (shoulders and knees must be covered). A refillable water bottle — Rome has free public fountains (nasoni) everywhere.
