Venice is the most unique city on Earth — and also the most misunderstood. Most Americans spend 1 day, see Piazza San Marco, ride a €80 gondola, eat a terrible €25 pizza near the Rialto, and leave thinking 'it was nice but overrated.' That's because they experienced Tourist Venice, not Real Venice. I'll show you the Venice of the Venetians — the bacari (wine bars) where a glass of prosecco and a cicchetto costs €3, the quiet islands where artists and artisans still work, and the Veneto mainland where prosecco grows on UNESCO hills.
Day by Day
Arrive at Venice Marco Polo airport or Santa Lucia train station. Water bus (vaporetto) to your hotel in Dorsoduro — the neighborhood where Venetians actually live. Orientation walk: Zattere promenade, Squero di San Trovaso (gondola boatyard), Campo Santa Margherita (Venice's living room).
Bacaro crawl — Venice's version of a pub crawl, but with tiny sandwiches (cicchetti) and wines by the glass (ombra). Hit 3–4 bacari between Rialto and San Polo. Budget: €15–20/person for a full lunch experience.
Sunset at Zattere (faces due west — golden light across the Giudecca canal). Dinner at a local osteria in Dorsoduro — seafood risotto, sarde in saor, and a bottle of Soave.
Buy a 48-hour vaporetto pass (€30). Individual tickets are €9.50 each. The pass pays for itself in 4 rides. Do NOT buy from resellers — only from official ACTV points.
Practical Info
Venice: vaporetto (water bus) only — no cars. Mainland: trains between cities are fast and cheap (Venice-Verona: 1hr, €10–15). Rental car for Prosecco hills and Valpolicella days.
Bacaro cicchetti: €1–3 each. Vaporetto pass: €30/48hr. Winery visits: €15–25. Restaurant dinners: €25–40/person. Venice is expensive for hotels but affordable for food if you eat like a local.
Spring: 14–22°C, occasional acqua alta (high water) possible. Summer: 28–33°C, humid. Fall: 15–24°C, beautiful light. Winter: 2–10°C, atmospheric fog, Carnival season.
Waterproof shoes or boots (Venice floods occasionally). Layers (lagoon weather changes fast). Umbrella. Comfortable shoes for bridge-climbing (Venice has 400+ bridges, all with steps).
