Wild Western Sicily

Ancient temples, street food mayhem, and Caribbean-blue waters

Best for: Adventurous eaters, History buffs, Beach lovers, Off-the-beaten-path seekers
Best months: May–June, September–October
Avg. daily budget: $100–180/day pp (excl. accommodation)

Sicily isn't just part of Italy — it's its own universe. Western Sicily in particular is where Greek temples stand in almond groves, where the street food makes grown men cry with joy, where the sea is so blue you'll think your sunglasses have a filter on. This is the part of Italy that's still raw, untouched, and wildly affordable. If you want the Instagram Italy, go to Positano. If you want the Italy that changes your perspective on life, come to Sicily.

Day by Day

Morning

Arrive in Palermo. Dive straight into Ballarò market — the oldest open-air market in Europe, running since the 10th century. It's loud, colorful, and overwhelming in the best way.

Afternoon

Street food tour (I'll map the exact stalls): arancine, panelle, sfincione, pani ca' meusa (spleen sandwich — trust me). The Palermo Cathedral and its rooftop walk. The Palatine Chapel's gold mosaics will leave you speechless.

Evening

Dinner in La Kalsa neighborhood — once Palermo's roughest area, now its coolest. Fresh seafood, Nero d'Avola wine, and the kind of energy that makes you want to move here.

ALICE'S INSIDER TIP

Palermo is safely chaotic — embrace it. The street food budget for an entire day: about €15/person. Yes, fifteen euros for some of the best food you'll ever eat.
