How do Italian autostrada tolls work?

You take a ticket entering the motorway and pay when you exit, based on distance. At the exit, use the lanes marked with white signs for cash or the blue card symbol; avoid the yellow Telepass lanes, which are for subscribers only and will strand you at the barrier with a queue behind you. Cards work reliably. Costs run roughly €6–8 per 100km, so Florence to Rome is around €20. Fuel on the motorway is dearer than in town, and the servizio (attended) pump costs more than fai da te (self-service).
