What is a ZTL and how do I avoid a fine?
A ZTL — zona a traffico limitato — is a camera-enforced restricted zone covering the historic centre of most Italian towns, and driving into one without a permit costs €80–300. There's no barrier and no flash: a camera photographs your plate, and the fine arrives months later through your rental company with an admin fee on top. Each gate you cross is a separate fine, so one wrong turn in and out can be several. Avoid it simply: park outside the centre and walk. If your hotel is inside a ZTL, they can register your plate for a temporary exemption — email them the plate number before you arrive, not after.
