How much is gas in Italy?

Expect roughly €1.70–1.90 a litre, which works out to around $7–8 a gallon — three to four times what you pay at home, and it changes the arithmetic of a road trip. A week of Tuscan driving might be €80–120 of fuel on top of the rental and tolls. Diesel is usually a little cheaper and most rentals are diesel; check which one before you fill, because putting the wrong fuel in is an expensive phone call. Self-service (fai da te) is cheaper than attended (servizio). Many rural stations close midday and on Sundays, and some are unattended at night, needing a card and exact procedure.
