Do Americans need a visa to visit Italy?
No. US citizens can enter Italy for tourism without a visa and stay up to 90 days. You need a passport and nothing else โ no forms to fill in before you fly, no fee to pay. The 90 days are counted across the whole Schengen Area, not Italy alone, so a trip that includes France or Greece uses the same allowance. If you're planning to stay longer than 90 days, or to work or study, that's a different conversation and it starts at an Italian consulate before you leave.
